Soul Associates is a collaboration between trumpeter Farnell Newton and pianist/producer Aaron Abernathy, rooted in a shared love of soul and the classic Midwest sounds of the 1950s and ’60s. Abernathy, a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist, has served as musical director for Black Milk and Slum Village and collaborated with Jack White, The Foreign Exchange, and Eric Roberson. Newton, one of the Northwest’s most versatile trumpeters, has toured with Jill Scott and Bootsy Collins and performed with legends including Aretha Franklin, Fred Wesley, and Stevie Wonder.
